It is for use with the contenteditable and offers a variety of commands to execute, once the command in executed on the document then the contenteditable will be adjusted according to the new command executed on the document. For example to create a button which executes the bold command (and make the contenteditable to enter to a bold mode) you can use this: <button onclick="document.execCommand('bold',false,null); document.getElementById('editable_div').focus(); return false; " >Bold</button> Here's a full list of the commands available.

There's a special method called execCommand which according to MSDN "Executes a command on the current document, current selection, or the given range". It is for use with the contenteditable and offers a variety of commands to execute, once the command in executed on the document then the contenteditable will be adjusted according to the new command executed on the document.

For example to create a button which executes the bold command (and make the contenteditable to enter to a bold mode) you can use this:

<button onclick="document.execCommand('bold',false,null); document.getElementById('editable_div').focus(); return false; " >Bold</button>
